We, one spirit, have partnered with the organization teeem to create Teeem Lakota. Teeem Lakota supports the initiatives of the allen youth center of the pine ridge reservation.
The following is the mission statement of the Allen Youth Center:
The Allen Youth Center is operated by the Oglala Lakota of Allen, SD. It works to enrich the lives of community youth through culturally-based activities and learning experiences.
The guiding principles for all programs and activities focus on the Lakota virtues: Generosity, Respect, Wisdom, and Fortitude.
The mission of the youth center is to create a stronghold that inspires, educates, and informs the young people of the community.
The youth center offers support, mentoring and tutoring to help kids be successful both personally and academically. Its programs are designed to teach kids about their culture, develop skills for their future, and be proud of who they are.
one spirit with the help of teeem will put all fundraising goals towards the improvement of daily life for children of the Pine Ridge Reservation.
The first initiative one spirit will help to fund is the new laundry center being built as an addition onto the youth center. According to Jeri Baker, The One spirit Director, the children of the Reservation see increased cases of lice that is becoming a hindrance to their growth and development. Without clean clothing, children are not going to school out of shame and embarrassment. We would like to begin our efforts by purchasing a much-needed industrial-sized laundry machine. We also want to build a laundry facility for the allen youth center.
Our goal as TEEEM Lakota is to help the Allen Youth Center meet these needs. We believe in empowering the young children of the Pine Ridge Reservation. Access to clean clothing is not insignificant, yet it is something most people in the United States take for granted. According to the Whirlpool, 1 in 5 students do not have access to clean clothes, making them more likely to miss school. This inevitably leads to higher dropout rates. Having clean clothing is a matter of pride and gives children a sense of self confidence that is immeasurable. Finally, staving off the lice infestation is a necessary cause that needs to be fought.
In addition to the laundry facility, The Allen Youth Center has long-term goals of addressing the issue of food sovereignty. Access to healthy food and paying for healthy food has become problematic to people on the Pine Ridge Reservation. These individuals suffer from terribly high cases of diet-related illnesses like heart disease and diabetes. The food sovereignty initiative at the Allen Youth Center hopes to see the creation and growth of a sustainable greenhouse. With this center, local people could enjoy a diet more traditionally Lakota. Moreover, students will learn about food that has cultural significance.
The goal in these initiatives is to offer projects that empower the youth and give them the ability and the opportunity to become healthy, educated, productive members of the Reservation and the Lakota future.
Finally, while we are working toward food sovereignty, the youth must be fed. Currently, the youth center provides daily nutritious meals and keeps nutritious snacks on hand for the kids. They also need shoes, clothes, coats, gloves, boots, and warm pajamas. Our efforts can also go towards these ends.
As Teeem Lakota, we will be working throughout the year to meet these needs.
